🛌 Spending the Night at Lemp Mansion: An Unforgettable Experience

In St. Louis, Missouri, the Lemp Mansion invites you to an overnight encounter steeped in history and mystique. 

We had the pleasure, ahem, of staying on the third floor in the Elsa room…the most haunted floor. (and no, it has nothing to do with Frozen!)

Looking at it from the outside, it looks like an old mansion. 

Once inside, the doors were locked in. Gasp!

But did we see or hear any ghosts? Keep reading to find out.

Once home to the prosperous Lemp family, this mansion has evolved into a haven for both history enthusiasts and thrill seekers. 

As night falls, its age-old walls whisper tales of the past, blending elegant charm with a hint of the supernatural.

The Lemp Family left an indelible mark on St. Louis, primarily through the William J. Lemp Brewing Company, which was once America’s largest brewery. 

Founded in the mid-19th century, the family brewery led the march of innovation in beer production, introducing advancements like artificial refrigeration. 

You might be surprised, but at its peak, Lemp beer was as renowned as Budweiser is today!

Their success was rooted in bringing the popular lager style beer to Missouri, turning St. Louis into a hub of brewing excellence. 

The mansion itself served dual purposes as a luxurious home and a bustling auxiliary office for the family business brewery. 

This made it not only a comfortable dwelling but also a central figure in the city’s burgeoning beer industry.

Tragedy and Mystery

While the Lemp family’s wealth was undeniable, so was the cloud of tragedy that hung over them.

The mansion became the stage for a series of heartbreaking events that stained its walls with sadness.

Several Lemp family members, including William Jr. and Charles, took their own lives within these walls, spiraling the mansion into a haunting legend.

One can’t help but ponder, was it the family’s immense pressure or something more sinister that led to these tragic events?

Some suggest a curse befell them, entwining their legacy with mystery and sorrow.

Their once-proud name became synonymous with sorrow, yet the story of their achievements remains just as compelling.

The Lemp Mansion continues to draw many, both for its historical prominence and its eerie allure.

Today, it stands as a reminder of both the heights of success and the depths of despair, inviting curiosity and chills in equal measure.

⛓️ The chain of events at The Lemp Mansion:

• Frederick Lemp, William’s favorite son, died under mysterious circumstances in 1901.
• William J. Lemp shot himself in the head in a bedroom at the family mansion.
• Elsa was considered the wealthiest heiress in St. Louis, committed suicide in 1920 while in bed. She was William Jr.’s sister.
• William J. Lemp, Jr. shot himself in the same building where his father died eighteen years earlier.
• His son, William Lemp III, was forty-two when he died of a heart attack in 1943.
• William Jr.’s brother, Charles, led a reclusive existence until he too died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The body was discovered by his brother, Edwin. Charles shot his dog, then himself in the head
• Edwin moved away and led a normal life and died from natural causes at the age of 90 in 1970. (Edwin was a very smart man!)
• Although there is no documentation, “the monkey faced boy” is said to be William’s illegitimate son, Zeke, born with Down’s Syndrome and hidden away in the attic which is now the 3rd floor, is said to have died in a fall down the stairs.

And this is where we heard Zeke!

The other two couples that were staying there with us, decided to try and get in the room on the third floor where Zeke was locked in by unlocking the door through the trap window above the door.

While she was standing on the chair reaching in, both she and I heard a loud growling noise.

She jumped off the chair quickly. We did not hear it again.

However, she was able to unlock the door and we got in.

In any case, there were no more instances and we ended up going to bed.

We were hoping to be able to check out the tunnels in the basement that connected the mansion to the brewery. However, they had been closed off and there was no way to get in them.

In addition, the mansion was once home to the Lemp family, who owned the William J. Lemp Brewing Co., a major player in the lager beer industry.

The brewery-boiling house was part of a five-block area that housed the brewery, located at the present-day corner of Cherokee and South Broadway in downtown St. Louis.
