Top 5 Reasons We Love RV Life (Even After 8 Years)

8 years full-time RVing and still loving it, discover 5 reasons RV life keeps us rolling. RV lifestyle tips, travel, freedom & joy!

RV Life: 5 Reasons It’s Still the Best Decision We Ever Made

It’s been eight years since we turned the key and rolled into full-time RV life. Eight years of sunrises in new places, spontaneous detours, family reunions in campgrounds, and learning more about ourselves (and our rig) than we ever thought possible.

People often ask us, “Do you still love it?” And our answer? Absolutely.

RV life isn’t always smooth roads and epic views; we’ve weathered our share of breakdowns, black tank mishaps, and rainy travel days. But even with the hiccups, this lifestyle has our hearts.

A spare tire sits on the road beside a vehicle on a trailer, with an open tool case nearby.

If you’ve ever wondered what keeps us rolling after nearly a decade, here are our Top 5 reasons we still love RV life, maybe now more than ever.

1. Freedom to Roam (and Stay Put When We Want)

There’s nothing quite like waking up and deciding where you want to be, and actually going there. Whether it’s chasing fall foliage, finding sunshine in winter, or staying near the grandkids for soccer season, RV life gives us the freedom to go where our hearts lead.

But it’s not just about movement. We’ve also learned to love the pause. Sometimes, we’ll find a peaceful campground or a new favorite town and stay for weeks.

That kind of flexibility, to roam or root, just doesn’t exist in traditional living. It’s freedom on your terms.

2. More Time With the People We Love

One of the biggest reasons we started this journey was family. We were living in Kansas to be near our grandkids, but realized we actually saw them more when we traveled.

With kids and grandkids spread across the country, and aging parents in both Florida and Buffalo, RV life has made staying connected easier, not harder.

Instead of quick fly-in visits, we get to live nearby for a while. We show up for birthday parties, school concerts, graduations, or just an ordinary Tuesday dinner.

A person wearing a blue graduation cap and gown with a white stole stands indoors near large windows, celebrating the day they stopped waiting for someday. The stole reads "WHS" and "2023" in red letters.

And when we’re not visiting family, we’re building friendships in campgrounds, RV rallies, and online RV communities. Life on the road is surprisingly full of connection, if you’re open to it.

3. Simplified Living (That Feels Surprisingly Luxurious)

It might sound odd to say that living in under 400 square feet feels luxurious, but hear me out. When you strip away the excess, closets full of “just in case” clothes, junk drawers, and unused furniture, what’s left is intention.

We use everything we own. Our days are less about maintaining stuff and more about making memories.

We spend less time cleaning and more time hiking, kayaking, or just enjoying our morning coffee with a view. Simplifying our lives gave us the space (and mental bandwidth) to really live it.

Plus, let’s be real: our RV has all the comforts we need, a comfy bed, a kitchen I know inside and out, and the joy of cooking outside on our Blackstone griddle whenever we want.

Simple doesn’t mean sacrifice.

4. Every Day Feels Like an Adventure (Even the Mundane Ones)

Some days, adventure looks like hiking in a national park. Other days, it’s finding the nearest laundromat, discovering the world’s best pie in a tiny town, or surviving a stormy night in the middle of nowhere.

RV life turns the ordinary into something just a little more exciting.

Even mundane routines, like meal planning or grocery shopping, become part of the adventure.

Will the next town have a decent grocery store?

Can we find a local farmers’ market?

How many meals can I cook outside this week?

That sense of novelty has kept us engaged, curious, and grateful, even years later. We’ve learned to embrace the unexpected, laugh when things go sideways, and find the magic in the little moments.

Like the time a herd of bison stopped traffic on our way out of the campground. You don’t get that in the suburbs.

5. Personal Growth and Resilience We Didn’t Know We Had

This lifestyle isn’t for the faint of heart, and that’s exactly why we love it.

RV life has stretched us in ways we never imagined. We’ve learned how to fix things on the fly, navigate big cities and backroads with a 40-foot rig, and communicate better as a couple (especially when backing into a tight campsite).

We’ve figured out how to make a living on the road, pivot when plans fall apart, and stay grounded when everything’s in motion.

Every challenge has made us stronger, more adaptable, and more confident. There’s a deep satisfaction in knowing we can handle what life throws at us, even if it involves duct tape, Google searches, or asking a neighbor for help.

And that kind of growth? It sticks with you, no matter where you park.

Still Loving the Ride

Eight years in, and we’re still waking up excited to see what the day brings. We’ve created a lifestyle that blends adventure, simplicity, family, and freedom, and we wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Sure, we’ve evolved over the years. We travel slower (slowmoading) now, plan a bit more (okay, a lot more), and appreciate the comfort of familiar campgrounds. But the spark is still there.

Two toasted marshmallows on a roasting stick held over a fire pit with burning wood—classic RV Life moments, set on grass outdoors.

So, whether you’re dreaming about RV life, just getting started, or already living it, know that the magic doesn’t wear off. In fact, it deepens.

And if you’re ever feeling stuck or overwhelmed, take it from us: sometimes the road really is the answer.
